during 1the high priesthood of Annas and 2Caiaphas, 3the word of God came to 4John the son of Zechariah in 5the wilderness.
And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming 6a baptism of repentance 7for the forgiveness of sins.
As it is written in 8the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, 9“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 10‘Prepare the way of the Lord, a make his paths straight.
11Every valley shall be filled, 12and every mountain and hill shall be made low, 13and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways,
14and all flesh shall see 15the salvation of God. ’”
He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, 16“You brood of 17vipers! Who warned you to flee from 18the wrath to come?
Bear fruits 19in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 20‘We have Abraham as our father. ’ For I tell you, God is able from 21these stones to raise up children for Abraham.
Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. 22Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ”
And the crowds asked him, 23“What then shall we do? ”
And he answered them, 24“Whoever has two tunicsb is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise. ”
25Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, 26what shall we do? ”
And he said to them, 27“Collect no more than you are authorized to do. ”
Soldiers also asked him, “And we, 28what shall we do? ” And he said to them, 29“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your 30wages. ”
As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, 31whether he might be 32the Christ,
33John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but 34he who is mightier than I is coming, 35the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you 36with the Holy Spirit and 37fire.
