Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You

1I thank God 2whom I serve, as did my ancestors, 3with a clear conscience, as I remember you 4constantly in my prayers night and day.
5As I remember your tears, 6I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy.
I am reminded of 7your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and 8your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
For this reason I remind you 9to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands,
for God gave us 10a spirit not of fear but 11of power and love and self-control.
Therefore 12do not be ashamed of 13the testimony about our Lord, nor of 14me his prisoner, but 15share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,
16who saved us and 17called us toa a holy calling, 18not because of our works but because of 19his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus 20before the ages began,b
and which now has 21been manifested through 22the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, 23who abolished death and 24brought life and 25immortality to light through the gospel,
26for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher,
27which is why I suffer as I do. But 28I am not ashamed, for 29I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until 30that Day 31what has been entrusted to me.c
32Follow 33the pattern of 34the soundd words 35that you have heard from me, in 36the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
By the Holy Spirit 37who dwells within us, guard 38the good deposit entrusted to you.
You are aware that 39all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
May the Lord grant mercy to 40the household of Onesiphorus, for he often 41refreshed me and was not ashamed of 42my chains,
but when he arrived in Rome 43he searched for me earnestly and found me--
may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on 44that Day!--and you well know all the service he 45rendered at Ephesus.
